Hello and thanks for checking in to my website.
I paint with acrylic and oil. I also sometimes use found materials to make assemblages.
I try hard to express emotions through my choice of colours.
I am interested in our human response to the world. Travelling often triggers new work. I observe how people live, the architecture, the landscape, the colours and respond to past events. I reflect on the subliminal ways we absorb what we see around us, and this feeds into my more abstract paintings. With these, I am always aiming to stir the emotions.
My process varies. I work from photos I’ve taken, making small sketches first in gouache paint, pencil or collage. I also carry a sketchbook and make little imaginative drawings or ideas. I try and re-use materials and make assemblages from found objects, forming links to previous lives and stories.
My work has been shown regularly in a variety of gallery contexts.
I have three times been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition: 2021, 2023 and 2024. Two of my paintings were also selected for the https://www.discerningeye.org/ show in 2023.
I also regularly show my work with the Crouch End Open Studios, Wivenhoe Art Trail.
My Background
I formally trained and worked as a Graphic Designer for over 20 years. I then returned to study for an MA at Central St Martins. The course fed into my passions of sustainability and interest in materials during 2006-2008 and led me on a new creative journey.
Following the MA, I gained commissions: a 3-dimensional shade structure for a Gold medal-winning Chelsea Flower Show garden; a window display for Louis Vuitton; a collection of contemporary wallpapers inspired by ecclesiastical embroideries; a suspended paper sculpture of laser cut Ginkgo leaves. I made printed textiles, ceramics and cards, some sold in the Tate Modern shop.
